EZ GO Lift Kits

If you are a newcomer to the world of golf carts then you might just think that a golf cart lift kit is some kind of hoist for loading your golf car onto a trailer or something to raise your cart off the ground so that you can get underneath it for servicing and maintenance. Well, not quite!

A golf cart lift kit is in fact designed to raise the height of your golf cart so that it can operate on ‘rough’ terrain and to improve your cart’s suspension to give it better performance and to give you a better ride.

Lift kits come in many different specifications raising your cart by as little as say 3 inches or as much as 10 inches or more and the kit that you choose will depend very much on the use that you wish to put your car to and the terrain over which it will be operating.

Electric Golf Cart Lift KitAs a general rule you should always try to purchase a lift kit from your own cart’s manufacturer or from a company which has been licensed to produce kits on behalf of the cart manufacturer. This will ensure that the kit has been manufactured to the same standard as the cart itself and that it has been made specifically to fit your cart. This is a very import point to note when considering the safety of your vehicle, especially as you are increasing the specification of your cart so that it can handle treatment which is rougher than simply pottering around your local golf course.

There are currently several lift kits which have been specifically designed for the E-Z-GO range of golf carts and you should be able to find what you are looking for either by talking to your local dealer or simply searching online for suppliers in your local area.

If price is a significant consideration then remember to shop around, but be careful if you are tempted to buy a cheap ‘generic’ lift kit from a manufacturer which has not been approved by E-Z-GO.

Fitting an EZ GO lift kit is not hard.

It is not at all uncommon these days to see people raising their golf carts well clear of the ground and fitting them out with large custom-made tires and, if that sounds like a costly and difficult job, then don’t worry because it is neither. Nowadays golf cart lift kits can be purchased for almost any cart you can think of and EZ GO lift kits are simple to fit and will not break the bank.

When buying a kit it is important to check that it can simply be “bolted on” to you cart. If it takes a degree in engineering to fit your lift kit then give it a miss and find yourself another model which requires you to do nothing more than tighten a few nuts to fit it.

Once your EZ GO lift kit is on the fun starts and you can add those custom wheels. For example, with a 6 inch lift kit you can take off your standard factory-fitted 16 inch tires and replace them with a set of popular 22 inch tires.

Although you can get lift kits which will raise your cart by as little as 3 inches, this will not give you much extra clearance and we would suggest that you look at 6 inches as a starting point. A 6 inch lift will give you good rough ground capability in most circumstances. However, if you want greater clearance, or are going for that “monster cart” look, then a 10 inch kit might suit you better.

Quality is important when it comes to buying lift kits and we would also strongly recommend that you look for high quality steel lift kits from suppliers who are prepared to back your purchase with a full satisfaction guarantee. Remember too that modern lift kits are designed to be simple to fit and so if your dealer tells you that his kit needs to be cut, bent or welded to fit your cart then run a mile. A spanner is the only tool you should need! Also, look for a dealer who is happy to provide you with free technical support if you run into problems and need assistance.

When you fit especially large tires to your cart you can start to run into problems sometimes and find that your new tires hit the cart body when you try a tight turn. To solve this you can fit offset tires which are fitted slightly farther from the cart body than normal tires. Not only does this solve the problem of the tire hitting the cart body, but it can also provide better stability through a wider wheelbase and looks great.

Finally, don’t forget that instead of buying an EZ GO lift kit you could opt for a ‘combo’ kit. This is simply a package of both a lift kit and a set of tires which are chosen to perfectly compliment your chosen lift kit.
